Is it possible to overfeed goldfish

Feed times daily. Overfeeding fish can kill them by polluting the aquarium water. It is not just the leftover fish food in the aquarium that will turn into the toxic ammonia and other pollution.

Even when the fish have eaten all the extra food you gave to them, all the food are still in the system. It is also possible they will continue to feed even though they are full.

And, you just have to be very careful in feeding them the right amount of food. Overfeeding can lead to multiple complications and can also cause the fish to die. Goldfish have a lifespan averaging about years, with some varieties living up to 30 years when provided with proper care. Unfortunately, many goldfish do not reach their lifespan potential due to inadequate housing conditions.

Housing needs to meet both their behavioural and physiological needs. Can Goldfish eat bread? No, bread is harmful to Goldfish. Bread expands when it gets into the stomach that can cause constipation in Goldfish. Typically, goldfish communicate with each other through body language but they do not have the ability to talk to each other. Unlike humans, fish generally communicate using noises like grunts, chirps and pops. Goldfish are peaceful, community fish.

Although they are not schooling fish, they enjoy the company of other fish. When kept in groups, these fish continuously interact with each other. So, goldfish benefit from companionship and can be kept in pairs or groups.

A goldfish bowl without a filter should be cleaned twice a week. With a filter you can clean it every days. Eating too many Goldfish at once can make you gain weight. Try feeding them pellets in the morning and then leafy greens at night. Other nutritious foods for goldfish are live worms and brine shrimp — if you can stomach seeing these wiggly creatures being eaten alive in your tank. If you have more than one goldfish, chances are that one is more athletic than the other.

Therefore, you cannot just spill pellets in the tank and count on all eating their fair share. One will most definitely eat more pellets than was allotted to it. Try feeding each one by hand one pellet at a time.

Yes, it is more time consuming but it really is the only way to guarantee each fish will eat the right amount. Due to selective breeding, goldfish have sensitive systems that have different nutritional needs and premium fish food will help ensure a long life. Of course, there are so many other factors involved in keeping your fish healthy. Food is one of the most important — you are what you eat! Your goldfish, with the correct care and attention, can live upwards of 10 years!

An early indicator that your goldfish is overfed is an unpleasant odor coming from the tank. Decomposing matter makes the water smell bad and a mix of uneaten food and fish waste also creates the perfect environment for bacteria to breed and weaken your fish's immune system.

Poor water quality quickly has an effect on your fish. Healthy fish have a slime coat that protects them from bacteria and disease.

If this protective coating is weakened from living in dirty or polluted water, the fish becomes susceptible to infection from common parasites and conditions such as white spot, fin rot or bacterial gill disease. Bloating, raised scales and a swollen abdomen are symptoms of swim bladder, which can also occur as a result of overfeeding.

Green or brown slime on aquarium glass is algae. Algae are simple organisms that thrive when exposed to excess nutrients left in the water from overfeeding your fish.

Although a small amount of algae isn't bad for an aquarium, it is unsightly and if left unchecked can choke aquarium plants with thick, stringy plantlike matter. Nitrate, silicate and phosphate levels are much higher in polluted water caused by decomposing fish food, and these three substances also contribute to an excess of algae.
